I decided the GL needs a 12v cigarette lighter plug-in for longer trips where I need to recharge the cell phone. This could also be used down the road for a GPS if I ever decide to do that. I think I have my mounting location. I found a sealed waterproof one that I plan on mounting under the tank just forward of the carbs. I want to be able to wire it so it's not a constant draw on the battery and will turn off power when I turn the ignition off. I read somewhere that there is an extra set of wires somewhere below the tank that aren't used. Can anyone clarify that for me ?

The black wire that goes to the rear brake light switch is switched by the ignition and is accessible under the seat. I would fuse the power plug as this black wire is fused by the main fuse by the starter solenoid and you would not want to blow it as the bike will stop.

On the cx's there is a brown wire in the headlight bucket for auxiliary items. Other than that the wire mentioned above is a good source. That's the wire that cx owners running ignitechs tap into.

I would use either of the two above mentioned wires to drive an automotive 5 position relay.

Something like this:

I would also buy the plug for it in case it ever went south on you. Just zip tie it up wherever you like.

Pull power for the plug straight off the battery. When the ignition is on the relay allows power to the power plug. When the ignition is off the relay denies power to the power plug. I would obviously put an appropriate size in-line fuse with power before the relay.

This will prevent you from pulling any 'real' current through old wires that may not have the best insulation left.
