Well this is going to be fun as the 400's were distributed in areas that didn't allow the 500's or larger. And in all areas they seem to be different.

So we need to see pictures of your bike.

Also what country/global location are you at because that makes a big deal too.

Hello

We've seen a few of the GL400's here in the UK

Imports from Japan and possibly Germany too if I have it right

Despite the 'GL' label these late bikes resemble the Custom

they have TI ignition, twin pot calipers and air forks too I think

but many parts are interchangeable with the Custom 500

bikes of that age

I'd say its an 1983/1984 ish model

I can probably l get more detailed info from a gay I know with one

Is that a Dnepr?? I like !!

Hi,

This may be interesting (I know - I really should go out more)!

There were at least two models, called GL 400. GL 400 Wing and GL 400 Custom.(I´ve seen GL 400 Wing 'Custom too)....

Your bike seems to have the custom model attributes (instruments, fuel tank, steering bars, etc). but the wheels are a little confusing. They loook to be from a 1980 standard model (being "plain" comstars, without 1978 - 1979 black plastic "spoke" tabs and, probably an 18-incher at the rear).

Can you find something on the bike (plate, engraving, or whatever) which would tell us more?

Generally, the second digit of the manufacturing number would tell which year (of the models manufacturing year run) the bike was made.

I suppose it´ll look something like "GL400 100xxxx". And normally the second digit, as said, tells what year it was made.

In Sweden there are some GL 400:s. As they are all "private imports" it seems that information isn´t quite true.

This is an excerpt from the Swedish reg. authority over every GL 400 here. I knowthat some of them were manufactured in 1978 -79, as they had round brake reservoirs (have seen three of them on the street), but probably registration routines were rather sloppy at the time.

You say your bike is very unoriginal. Maybe. But you should be able to find out rather well, by looking on the bike and its parts rather closely. Even if you have an 18 incher at the rear, the stands were probably not changed / replaced. That should tell you (lean angle) if the wheels are original. Etc, etc, etc.

Just looked at the pic again and realised the wheels look wrong for a GL400

that would have had reverse comstars when new and those are from older

models.

you may have a 'bitsa' its not uncommon.

Reg,

I can´t 100 % vouch for these 400 models. What I know is that I´ve seen three different GL 400 / 500 standard models that were advertised for sale as GL Silver Wings. I saw two of them in the flesh + one in picture and all seemed to have round master cyl, reservoir, one front disc brake and 78-79 black plastic radiator shroud.

Maybe I missed out a little in my previous post - there may have been differences between the 400 and 500 models as to when they started to make them. Also between the standard model and the Custom.

Now if we back off a little and start all over again with the basics?

We know the frame number. The bike has alu radiator shroud, 1980 (for all that I know) standard model wheels, definitely seems to be a Custom model.

I think we need some pictures.

What about the crankcase breather?? Close pictures of the cyl heads?? Front brakes (discs, calipers). A closeup of the brake fluid reservoir?

One step at a time - and we should be able to nail this one!

Doctor3lo,

Your engine- and frame numbers match nicely. It´s quite normal that they are some numbers apart.

Aren´t the Dnepr and the Ural quite similar? From what I´ve heard the Ural is "better" put together, the Dnepr is rather rough with inferior quality.??? At least has the Ural a better reputation here - there are some of them on the streets.

Just been musing over it

I've only been aware or the later TI/twin pot GL400's

and know two guys in London with them

Stures post shows there may be wider variatons

We also know its a 'bitsa'

I think if we determine if its CDI or TI that will help and we can ignore the

year and just concentrate on what will work as we know many of the parts

on these bikes are interchangeable.

( which is my way of echoing Stures post
)

I think you're right there.

What I think we are going to find is that he has a

cx500 custom frame and body with a gl500 ti engine. And I would just call it a gl500 engine so he doesn't get mixed up having to explain what it is.

The forks look to be 78-80's.

Does the engine have a rear section that looks like this?

Or this.

Just for your information there is a CX Club in France.

As France seems to have got 400 CX/GL bikes as regular imports??, chances are you could get some help through the French club??

I know language may be a problem, but there ought to be someone...

My French is not much to write home about, though. I can understand a little, but not as much as needed to discuss motorcycles etc.

What all do you need for a carb repair kit? Do you need the whole thing or the basics. If you can get the Vb number off the lower left of the carbs then Larry can tell you exactly what you have.

I thought there was a thread explaining the numbers but I'll have to look it up.

No, XA was Sidevalve with chain final drive. BMW R12 is near XA too much. It is one of two heavy (in russian standard) bike - Ural. 39 cubic inches, cardan drive shaft, 4 gear and many happy days for russian bikers. It is too hard to find motorcycle-man in Russia, those never ride Ural.

Thank You... I had never heard of the "Ural" until this. I did some reading and it's a cool bike. I bet it rides as good as it looks

I had some recollection of aramacchi producing a pancake engine (horizontal) motorcycle for HD... I could only find the XA.

Hmmmm.... I wonder what it cost to get a Ural to New Orleans. Our sea port is a destination for many Ships from Russia and the former union. Grain goes out, Crude oil comes in.
