Gey Gang,

I have an '81 GL500 with about 19k miles on it. I've only had it two months and I've put the last 1500 miles on it.

I serviced it with a wix filter and Rotunda oil. My question is this, How noisey are these engines supposed to be and still be ok?

It sounds like the valves are all tapping. There is a marked rattle in the clutch housing and the chain tensioner bolt sounds like a box of marbles that wheeers like crazy when I rev it.

These noises combine in a chorus that really irritates me when I'm riding. I singled them out with a mechanic's stethescope. I'm an ASE master tech. but this is my first Twisted V-engined bike. I really do like it. It's like a Moto Guzzi without the refinments or the price. In fact, I like it so much I bought a hurt CX500 to fix up cause the price was right.

There is a marked whirring from the trans when riding then backing down in first or second gear.

Any and all comments on the common acceptable noises will be appreciated.

Thanks

A recent poster, with a very similar mileage, was upset to find that through neglected maintenance the Cam chain had worn prematurely. They can give 70k miles or less than 20k if abused by none regular adjustment.

Adjust the cam chain 1st,

Here are some engine sounds to compare,

This may or may not be your problem but if it is then both myself and other contributors can help you do the job with minimal tools.

you can read this thread as an idea of the work involved,

It may 1st appear daunting but we have helped many CX/GL owners do the job themselves and once done you can go easily 50k miles with routine maintenance.

Thanks for the info and the offer. Suspecting it needs a chain I'll ask you for a good source of parts for these bikes. I did the chain adjustment when I did the oil change. I have a Clymers. It leaves alot to be desired but I've been reading manuals for many years so I guess I'll be ok. Are there any tricks to the engine R&R that the book doesn't address? One more thing, the valves are noisy. I adjusted them according to Clymers but they still rap alot. Is there a trick or maybe I should look at the adjusting screws for flat spots.

Thanks again,

Danno
