I removed the starter a couple weeks ago, putting in the new one and can't remember which mounting bolt the negative battery cable attaches to, is it the top or the bottom? Or does it matter? Thanks.

What bike?

sounds like a TI motor as CDI (ZAB) batteries ground on the frame at the battery tray.

Not that I expect it matters, what is important is

you have sound reliable connections

It's a cx650

On one of my CX the ground strap from the battery which goes to the centre of the bike/frame and is a PITA to get to broke there so I just measured it and got one from an Auto shop and bolted it onto a bared frame point.

it does not matter,as long as you have a good earth[frame].the starter motor is close and convienient.
