Anyone have a good way to remove old gas stains/varnish from an engine block? Petcock leaked badly and made a bloody mess over winter storage.

The clear coat on the engines is pretty tough but I'd start off as mild as you can - dishwashing soap and a soft brush, simple green etc. to start with as some of the stronger stuff will attack the clear.
