My '78 CX-500 decided to take a dump near a curb and the Right spark plug boot sheared off above the plug.

Looks like the boot was specially designed.

Is this a dealer only part if available or am I going to have to scavenge from someone's spares?

Would a spare be a good way to go or would it be adviseable to go new?

Are the spark plug wires replaceable from the coil or is it molded into the coils?

Thanks!

They seem hard to find over there. Some in the US have bought from Wemoto over here in the UK as they ship internationally and are a good company,

http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Honda/CX_500_A/79-80/

I recommend getting the ones of that page as they are the,"None Resistor" type so have less to go wrong,

but to make the purchase worthwhile with postage it may be worth your while looking for a few other things you think you may need from you own model/year page,

Not too many months ago, on the old forum, somebody posted an alternate supplier here in the U.S. and I think they found it by writing to whoever builds the things.

When you think about it thay aren't too terribly different from the automotive ones used on 4 valve per cylinder engines where the wire has to feed through the valve cover.

I wonder if http://www.magnecor.com might have access? They seem to have about everything else and are really nice people to deal with.

I went ahead and sent them an e-mail with what details I had, if there's any numbers visible on the original &/or replacements it might also be a help so let me know.

Marshallf3,

I had no luck finding the post you reference in the old forums. Not searching on the right terms apparently.

Yeah, cross posting makes it even harder to find info.

Someone here in the USA or Canada needs to step-up to the plate and talk to BOTH these companies

www.magnecor.com (USA)

www.auroraelectronics.com (Canada)

Please talk to them, and if they accept, send them a set of spark plug wires so they can duplicate them. They've both done this before for many specialty automotive spark plug wires --- they're both great companies. Some would be a HERO if they did this.

Did a Google search for "NGK spark plug cap" and got this (among a bunch of other stuff:

"1978 Honda Cx500 Maggot 1979 Honda Cx500 Custom 1980 Cx500 Deluxe ... Old Bike Barn sells NGK XB05F Resistor Type Spark Plug Caps Item#: 176355 for $6.95 ..."<BR sb_id="ms__id809">

It looks like it came from an archive that didn't load for me..

NGK has a chart that explains all the numbers of the plug boots. In all the specs ours don't exist. The closest I came was a straight one without the angle. The angled one that they have is about an inch short.

I'm not needing the method on how to remove the resistor.

I've broken the spark plug cap before the elbow on the long part of the plug cap.

I may end up trying to repair this one for now as no one seems to be able to point me to a source.

A dab of aluminum house wiring conductive grease like Oxgard and some epoxy around the edges.

Let that cure then seal it good with a microballoon epoxy mix, sand smooth, and call it done.

There's a XB05F and there's an XD05 which is a different angle; One is a 105 degree angle and the other is 120 degree angle.

The XB05F is listed as 3 inches long by one of the ebay sellers.

Going to have to disassemble mine and start some measuring...

I wrote Magnecor and they don't have anything on the shelves but said if we could get out hands on a bad one that's still physically intact enough to measure and look at they'd do thir best to figure out a solution.

Anyone have an old one that would serve this purpose?

I'd be more than willing to front this project. Does anyone have a couple spark plug wires in-tact you can mail me? I will happily contact magnecor and aurora so we can get a source for this.

If the CX and the GL use the same one, then I do. It is off of my wife's 81 GL500. the only thing wrog with it is that it has a chunk missing at the bottom.

A search of Bike Bandit shows they stock it, and they want $29.18 each for the plug and cap. Link If that doesn't come up, search for P/N 625181 (3855004-001). Item #3 on the Wire Harness schematic.

$22.29 at CheapCycleParts.com

Will look for another supplier. A search for it at www.NGK.com only lists the spark plugs, unless I missed something.

Any straight plug should work to get it running while we research for a replacement.

Mine have Nichiwa K05F on the sides. A google search lists this on the old CC board in a post from 2008.

Well, if someone will send them one they'll try and find an answer for us. I'd do it but it wouldn't make any sense to ship it to me then for me to turn around and ship it to them.

Hit their website, mention my previous letter and ask for a mailing address: http://www.magnecor.com
