HI ALL, I have recently got a 650 turbo (13,000 miles)and have sorted the brakes out and before i start using it in ernest i thought i would go though the obvious bits and pieces .

i checked the air filter and found it had been what i would consider heavy to over oiled.

the spark plugs are dpr7ea9 which i think are ment for cold climate ridding (strange as it has been in texas for years).

changed the engine oil and filter, and the shaft drive oil.

my questions are is there a reason for the plug grade that i am not aware of.

would the condition of the plug/air filter cause it to idle at 1600 rpm.

is there a K&N filter that will swap out easily and are there any jetting or other considerations.

and is there anything else i should look at,

thanks in advance mark

I would just remind you to Get some Moly-60 and make sure the rear splines are lubed up if it has been sitting for a long time.

I found a universal UNI filter at a local dirt bike shop. I cut it down and glued the 2 ends together with pliobond. It worked out great and only cost me around $25.00 . I used the the GREEN filter from Uni, comes in a sheet thats 16x12. when you glue it put some on both ends and let it set up for a day then put some more on both ends again then stick together. I found the pliobond at ace hardware. Good Luck!

+1 on the UNI filter material, I think it is superior to the OEM filter. I used a sewing machine instead of glue, and if I remember correctly one sheet made exactly 3 filters.

Use DPR8EIX-9 iridium or platinum plugs. Clean the fuel strainer in the tank and the strainer in the in the fuel pump to make sure all is clear. Adjust the idle speed as necessary. There is a K&N mod- check the old board archives or TMIOA, but it is not necessary.
thanks to all,

i have done the mod to the air filter pedestal with the 5mm/1/4 spacer to help it seat properly.

and ordered some new plugs.

i will check the strainers hopefully this weekend.

cheers mark.
