Restoring colour of original tank

738 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Gerard
My 79 custom (blue) tank is in pretty decent shape but the colour or color is faded over the years. Can anyone give tips in how to gently restore the color. Not looking to repaint at this time. Leaving the old decals on for now, although I will be replacing them one day, but trying not to damage them while restoring the tank colour. Thanks!

Not a restore tip...but a keep well tip ..
Use a 2 bucket system to clean...use good microfibre cloths or new sponges
Keep sufaces clean and dry

Most spraypainters in the past used to dislike waxes and polishes as it could make the respray more difficult "to take".. ..(b4 someone chimes in)yes i know there are commercial wax removers....but spray painters always told me that.....

You need to think do u want patina or are you aiming for a gentle cut of the surface??.

A combined polish/sealer like Race Glaze might work for you. It will cut the oxidation from the outermost clear coat and reseal the surface. Be careful, though, as it can easily strip the color from the factory decals if you get too aggressive around those.

More a gentle cut to make it look newer. Thanks.
Meguires Plastix cleaner/polish ,works good at taking the gunk of the paint without damaging the decals. Works excellent on "plastic" windshields.
