It depends on what kind of blinkers you want to install. I drilled a hole in my headlight mount and bolted it on there, but there are also some you can put on your bar ends or even stick to the side of you radiator. Most of those will be LEDs and you will need to change your flasher unit, or you can pick up some incandescent lights if you don't want to make that conversion.
It is easy to replace mine was under my right side cover, but I've seen some under the left side cover. All it is unplug the old flasher and plug in the new one, but if it was like mine you will need the 3 prong flasher ( Part# EP-36) you can get this at you local auto store for around $10. If your current flasher only has 2 prongs you will have to add a ground but I did mine in 10 min. If needed let me know and i can post a picture of how I did mine when I get home from work.
Since its your daily rider. You should determine the style you want, then gather the parts. Then you'll be in a position to peel off the ugly and replace with your style.
You may want to go back to the OEM look or something more modern using LEDs.
Depending on what you decide this could be a weekend project or involve a couple weeks. Also be aware, the wiring may have been altered. Get a wiring diagram. I'm pretty sure it will be needed.
The most simple would probably be to go back to OEM style. Dig around on the Inet for pictures of the '81 CXC.
