I want to remove the clutch plates as the bike has been stood for 20+ years and no doubt they will be stuck together. On other bikes I have simply used a gun to remove the centre nut but the workshop manual seems to suggest that you must use a special clutch tool to avoid damage to the pressure plate. As the springs etc are already off I can't really see how the pressure plate could be damaged just by undoing the nut but thought i would ask before going any further. Videos I have seen doing this on the standard CX500 just seem to undo the nut with a pegged socket which I have already.
Leave the lifter plate off but refit the springs and bolts to lock the clutch. Then you should be able to undo the special nut. You may also need to lock the crank to prevent engine rotation.
This should work, but I have made special tools for this job and don't actually use this method.
All done and reassembled. All of the plates were stuck solid together. Had to clean all of the steels by sanding as after 20 years they were pretty badly corroded but all well within spec with regards to their thickness so all good so far. Onwards with the rebuild...
Just a suggestion, but since you are already disassembled, I would go ahead and order new clutch springs. The aftermarket ones are great and relatively cheap.
I just removed my clutch and i used one of those specialty 4 prong spanner type sockets and an electric impact gun, worked fine it seemed. Obviously a different approach will have to be used to torque the nut.
