I'm having a lot of trouble reinstalling the rear engine cover - I spent a diligent hour trying to get the damn thing back on.

I've installed a new timing chain, mech seal and oil seal.

I'm considering that maybe I don't have the fly wheel seated all the way onto the tapered crank shaft but there isn't any play although i can move the starter gear back and forth.

There's at least an inch gap when the case stops. I can tell the stator sticks to the magnets but i'm not sure how to get around that.

Check the gearshift lever assembly and actually everything else that could potentially stick out, assume nothing is correct, compare with other peoples' pics of the rear of the engine with cover off, for example, as a reference.

Tap tap tap with a rubber mallet at the upper frame bolt mounts. It'll go.

Be careful not to smash any dowels, but if everything is aligned properly, it should just need some tapping to "persuade" it together, like Joe said.

I got it!

my idiot self had the shifter rod washer on the wrong side of the shifter "paws"/teeth. slid right on when I put the washer on the "non-case-side" of the teeth.
