The Regulator Rectifiers on these bikes are usually only 5 wires.3 are for the Stator and the other two are Positive and negative(Ground).These are usually Red for +V and Green or Black for -V.

A universal 3 phase RR can be used,

its definatly running a 6 wire r/r, the standard 3 yellows the red wire which is v+ on the old r/r the green wire went to earth and i can only presume the black went v-,, but this other one the black is substituted by a brown but as i said the bike engineer reacons this brown is the earth and the r/r came of a bmw donor bike

He is most likely right.Basically the RR has an AC side and a DC side and so long as the AC side 3 wires go to the Stator and the DC side have a plus 12v and a ground you are good to go
