its definatly running a 6 wire r/r, the standard 3 yellows the red wire which is v+ on the old r/r the green wire went to earth and i can only presume the black went v-,, but this other one the black is substituted by a brown but as i said the bike engineer reacons this brown is the earth and the r/r came of a bmw donor bike

He is most likely right.Basically the RR has an AC side and a DC side and so long as the AC side 3 wires go to the Stator and the DC side have a plus 12v and a ground you are good to go

I have a BMW and a Honda and BMW do use brown for earth

so the guy may well be right.

Any idea what model?

It didnt come off a k series as they use proper alternators

I'd say its probably for an R series

the snag is if its an aftermarket one the colours may not be the

same as BMW use and may have been pin accurate instead

Its easy to check luckily

I'd get a digital meter with a diode tester and put the red meter lead on the earth

( brown or green?)

and see if it gives beeps and gives a reading of about 0.6v when you put the black lead on any of the yellow phase leads.

test the red wire from the RR in the opposite way to confirm its an output.

The sense wire ( brown or green?) wont give you any reading

great il give that a try now as my multi meter is next to me, but somthing that was pointed out to me just now was that the red wire being 12+ is the same gauge wire as the brown, so thinkin on the lines as there should be the same current going thu the + and- wouldnt it make sence that the brown would be - as the green is smaller in gauge size,, prehaps im wrong ????
