Any ideas on adjusting my rear shocks without the use of a spanner wrench???

Sure, vise grips or linemans wrench with a cloth to protect the the shock surface will work. Been there done it.

Channel locks all the way. Using the centerstand makes it easier.

You used to be able to pick up a suitable 'C' spanner from bicycle shops. I've been using one of these for 35 years.

Most 'bone yards' have a shelf of OEM tools somewhere. They would likely have the proper wrench available, for a buck or two.
