I have owned my 179 Cx Custom for almost a month and am enjoying the bike. I still need to fix trip meter and ignition switch won't turn bike off , so I use the kill switch. Just recently i have noticed a buzzy vibrating sound when I apply my rear brake....instead of the squeal you can hear from a car's disc brakes this is a louder deeper sound. Kind of hard to explain but the sound is quite noticeable. I don't have any knowledge or experience with drum brakes.....obviously they need servicing....is this a serious issue in terms of safety. Thanks for your help in advance.

Does it happen randomly?

If so I get the same thing. It's odd but I think I solved mine in a way. If I adjust the brake rod to much or to little it will get a little buzzing every few times. But when I find the sweet spot it never happens.

The rear shoes are very manual and easy to service.

Since the bike is still new to you, it would be worth it to pull the rear brake and at least take a look. Your shoes or another part in the drum assembly could be shot. Mine were pretty horrible after a month or two after I got my bike. It's a pretty simple process to remove the rear wheel and brake assembly. If you have a repair manual, it should explain how to do it in detail.

You should fully service the rear end.Get a manual.Hard back is best but you can download one from here,

http://coodie.com/cx/

Strip and clean the rear hub assembly including the brake actuator arm and re-grease the drive box splines and check and replace if needed the wheel bearings. They are the same as the front e.g RS 6302.

Also here's a good check list,

Also change the rear drive box oil,
