Should I be able to crank it by hand with the engine off?

If you have a 500,,the fan is not electric,,it is attached to the cam shaft and will not turn by hand.

No, there is no fan clutch, it's attached to the camshaft. If you can turn it, you have a big problem.

Phew! I was afraid it was the other way around. Thanks! Better to feel a bit silly than have a big problem and not know it.
