My very first street machine when I was 15 years old was a custom. I always fancied the ‘79 model year because I liked the color choices and the 120 mph speedo. I always hated the 85 mph speedos. I regretted selling it, but back in the day…it was the only option for upgrading. The older I get…the more I long for the toys of my youth. I tracked down this completely stock ‘79 and my intention is to make it as close to new that I possibly can with the original parts. It’s a low mileage machine, only 14K on the clock. The gauges and controls aren’t all faded, so it must have been inside or covered up. It runs, but suffers from the typical issues due to neglect. Brakes, seals, the mufflers were completely rusted out and someone removed the baffles. The chrome had a lot of surface rust…the aluminum was heavily pitted and oxidized…the paint was full of scratches and swirls and a lot of the black painted bits were faded and dull. Stay tuned for many photos as I try and resurrect this beauty back from the brink of death.

The first thing glaring at me was the paint on the gas tank, the gas cap and the aluminum latch. I hand rubbed the tank and side covers and they came back to life pretty well. I repainted the gas cap back to the original black and polished the latch with some mothers polish

The exhaust…the good, the bad and the ugly. The header pipes had some rust…the collection box was rusty and the mufflers were roached. I found an exhaust on EBay that had decent looking mufflers. I managed to piece together a complete, original exhaust from these two. Lots of chrome polishing…a repaint of the collection box and muffler tips. Polished and reused all of the hardware and new crush gaskets…he end result turned out pretty darn nice.

The air filter….by the looks of it…original to the bike. I’d swear the foam they used was the same that GM used in all of their headliners during that era…what hadn’t disintegrated…turned into a black sludge like material. It was replaced with a new one.

Well…I came to the realization that the aluminum just wasn’t going to polish itself. I really love the look of polished aluminum, but I abhor trying to bring back neglected aluminum. I’m just a garage/ driveway wrench turner without access to some handy tools that would make this job a whole lot easier…so without too much whining…I started to hand polish the finish. Starting with a 600 grit paper, moving to 1000 and then finally to a 0000 steel wool with some mothers aluminum polish. It’s easier to do the parts off the bike, but in the case of the valve covers and intakes…I left them in place…those fins are a nightmare. I’m not quite finished with it yet…but it’s coming along nicely.
