I have been working on my 81 cx500c, I have been having issues at higher rpms, I also have a complete 83 cx650 in boxes in my garage.

I was wondering if the cdi an coils would work off the 83 cx650 on the 81 cx500. I want to test these parts out an was hoping they would be compatible.

Does anyone have a parts list that would show what would work an what wouldnt?

You can compare the parts numbers from the manuals. Bikebandit.com (and a bunch of other sites) include a blown up PDF with every part. If the numbers match, same part.

I was just looking at that for oem replacement but then to check the after market the parts listed were exactly the same.

The 650 would be Transistorized Ignition(TI), the 1981 has a CDI, they are two different systems and they or the coils are not interchangeable.



Unless someone modified one (possibly the 81 to use TI.)



The 81 would have a box under the seat(the CDI,black or gold colored), the 650 has two spark units.See the photo below by DaveF.

The CDI coils have one small wire going to them from the CDI, the TI coils have two small wires on them.
