I have been lurking for a while getting tips on how to make my CX project going and finding lots of good info. Just wanted to share a few photes of the cheap CX cafe build. I started the project due to the price, $300 for 2 bikes and a spare engine. The first is pictured and not finished yet and the second will be steampunked and that has already started the transformation. The cafe racer started out as a partial basket case. Some of the manufacturers represented are; Honda (F4 front end), Sportster rear shocks, Ducati tail section, Yamaha R6 exhaust and Polaris carbs. The bike build has been cheap and the bike rides and hanles well. Hope you enjoy the pix.

What wheel are you running with that f4 front end?

Stock wheel, 19" with spacers to adapt the 600RR disks. I just got the F4 disks in the mail today and they will replace the 600RR as they are a bit smaller and the calipers will fit without the brackets. This is not a finished project yet. I do not like the gas tank or the 16" back wheel. Since the frame was painted already I stuck it out with the dual shocks. If anyone needs the dimensions for the conversion I have them in a PDF file

Edit: The wheel bearings and seals need to be changed to a larger ID size. I also used an F2 speedo drive but of course the accuracy is off. Personally just a tach is good enough as the speedo is a PITA to retro fit. The seals are a must or the axle will corrode.

Mikuni 38mm flatslides. They are from a Polaris snowmobile. The spacing is too narow and new spacers must be made so that the carbs will fit on the stock intakes. The airfilters are for a car 48mm intake. The outside of the filters were discarded and an adaptor had to be made to fit the filter to the carb. I spend a whole weekend getting the carbs to fit but they look and sound cool IMO. The carb slides rattle at idle. They were also cheap at $130 for the set.

cool-looking bike...question, how about those rear-sets? i'm in the market for a solution to my rear-set problem, are those bought or built? if they're built, you wouldn't happen to have the specs written down somewhere would you?

The rear sets are from a 929 honda. I am not a big fan of the way I did the linkage and thinking of changing the setup as the bike may be steam punked in the near future. Gears, cables or chain and sprockets would be used instead of linkage. I can send the dimensions and what it takes to build. You need to weld up a few items and machine a few bits but there is no frame modding with this setup.

if you've got the dimensions and info handy that'd be awesome, i would appreciate it. i'll add my email address to my profile. i think the steampunk theme is a great idea, if you could operate the shifter with a series of gears, maybe set on a rail, that would be definitely be unique man...i'd love to see that happen. are you planning to do a lot of brass and/or copper?

I am doing a punk CX500 for my friend and have got the chain and sprocket set and a gear set. I will use whatewer I like the best on his project. The other set will go on my bike as the cafe theme is somewhat over used these days and I want something that is unique. Lots of leather brass copper and gears sundials etc will be used. If I can figure out how to post pictures easier I may do a build thread. It will be detailed with dimensions,material and components used used. I typically design the parts to be build in Solid works then convert to a PDF file 1:1. Cut the outline out and paste to an aluminum sheet. Then center punch the hole locations and use a band saw to cut the rough part out.

I am changing the engine this week (maybe) and then I can make a 1:1 copy of the parts that can be Emailed to you in a PDF format. The only issue you may have is the way I mounted the top bolt into the frame. I made an aluminum round piece that slips into the frame boss and threaded it to whatever thread the stock frame has. This needs to be made in a lathe.
