I was having carb problems with my wife's 'new' GL I (Gas was leaking from the bottom). So I took the carb of of my parts bike and put it on her bike. That solved the leaking problem, but the bike runs really rough. It sounds like a sick Harley. Here is some info that may be of help: It will not run for long with the choke off, I can't get more the 5500 rpm out of it and the header on the right side never gets hot. I know that last part means something, but I'm not sure what. It has new plugs and fresh gas in it. I also added so me Berrymans B-12 to the gas.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A few things to check for...

1- airleaks, make sure the boots are all tight etc

2- try pulling the plug boots one at a time with the motor running.

3- dont assume becuase its a new plug that it works--check the plug gap.

4- check the resistor/spring/aluminum rod in the plug boots.

5- check to see if you are getting spark, plug out of the cylinder, plugged into the boot, and the threads to the frame, you should see sparks (be careful not to get 'bit')

6- double check the float heights are set properly

7- swap the coils left to right, and see what happens.

The carbs you took off has a possible sticking float needle, I had mine do that on the bike I bought that had been liad up for about 8 years (garaged so in very very good condition) and tapping the one that was leaking solved it until I got around to taking the float needle out and cleaning it. Sometimes just taking it out and cleaning it can dislodge a tiny piece of dirt that is preventing it from closing when the float bowl is full so petrol keeps flowing in and the carb will then overflow

The ones you put on appear to have the opposite, no fuel is getting through. Eithera sticking float needle through lack of use, or blocked jet. Easiest way, unscrew the carb bleed screw on each side one at a time, with the fuel turned on, if fuel flows from the bottom of each carb drain then you know it isn't fuel. If no fuel comes out of one carb then you know the float valve is sticking shut, preventing fuel from filling the float bowl up

Good call Steptoe...you can polish the brass seat the needle goes into with either a small piece of scotch bright or some 0000 Steel Wool. I use the 0000 and a small hemostat to clean the seats. check the condition of the rubber tip on the needle too.

[Edit] start by opening the drains on the float bowls to see if they have fuel in them. A babyfood jar fits under there perfectly (if you dont have hoses) and is the perfect volume.

As above and one of the most common problems when any work having had the carbs off is introducing new problems via the carb boots either side of the carbs on refit. It's very easy to malform one of the boots so they don't seal correctly and the clamps don't grip right. This usually occurs on the Air-box side inners as it's harder to see.

My 2cents.

That too is a good 2cents. Well played

I sealed mine up with some black RTV.

Did you clean the carb from the parts bike? My clue is not running w/out choke.

Header not getting hot and RPMs not going over 5500....cylinder not firing! Clean carb.

What is the B-12??

I ended up taking the carb off of her '81. It's running well now. I plan to rebuild both of the other carbs in the future. I got a lot accomplished today. I got the carb on, changed the rear tire and installed the fairing mounting bracket. Almost have it road worthy. I just need to bleed the brakes, change the front tire, change the fork oil and install the fairing. I hope to have it on the road this week. Her '81 has a bad oil leak (front seal), so it has been parked. It needs the stator changed, so I will do both jobs well the engine is out. I'll replace the cam chain tensioner as well if needed.
