need cam chain info

i have a 1980 cx500d,seems like a good machine havent had it long,,,,but in going over some of these post it seems these engines cam chains eat blocks for lunch.sooo how often should i pull it down to check?is there any manual adjustment to it?is there a rule of thumb how long they generally last.thanks
