It's missing 100cc.

I worked on a 400C and of course test rode it.

They go OK but you can feel the missing CCs.

It wouldn't be so bad if the CX wasn't such a heavy bike.

Where did he live at the time? That looks like a later non-US Standard. By the wheels, it could be a Deluxe with the headlight cowl and turn signals from a Standard.
The tank could go either way. Was that graphic scheme stock in any market?

My bro had a CX in the mid 80's in Japan. Here's a pic. Which one do you think it is? I just bought my old one and had no idea he used to have one!
Bike id aside.....
Did he stay with bikes?
Did he marry his pillion?

Japanese home market? Maybe he was stationed overseas, and the pretty girl on the back was a local.

EDIT: I missed "in Japan."

Most of the pages at Motorcycle Specs are pretty good. I guess they just goofed on this one. Did you contact them to let them know about the errors?
Not as yet re contact.....could be better from someone with official title.....
