Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and working on my 1981 CX500 but now I want to get it back on the road. I ordered Murray's carb set last week and worked on the install today then I ran into a couple of issues. Today I got my airbox and old carbs taken off, and the new carbs installed but I seem to be having a few issues. The bike hadn't been started for over a year and seemed to have some issues with the old stock carbs which is why I decided to install the new aftermarket carbs. But now I wonder if maybe I could have another problem with the ignition system as well?
1. On my new carbs I have gas leaking out of the bottom purple hose on my left carb. With the petcock open, after a minute or so gas will slowly drip out of the hose with the rag below it in the photo. Are these purple hoses supposed to be open to the atmosphere or did I miss something? Any idea why I am getting this or what I did wrong?
2. I am also having trouble getting the bike to fire up with the new carbs but I haven't verified if it is a problem with the fuel system or the ignition system yet. When I bought the carbs, Murray recommended doing the spark plug cap upgrade also <http://cx500forum.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Servicing_the_Sparkplug_Caps> which I am planning on getting to next. Any tips on diagnosing why the bike won't start?
3. Today after I took out my stock airbox I noticed I am going to have a problem with not being able to mount the stock battery to anything any longer. I have seen pictures of some of you guys customizing your bikes by moving the battery after chopping your seat or making a new platform down below the bike. How should I mount the stock battery now that I have no airbox?
I also plan to upgrade my exhaust to the no-H box but wanted to get the bike running again before I move onto that project. <http://cx500forum.com/forum/cx-customization-modifications/20432-new-quick-build-exhaust-6.html>
Cheers,
-Mark
