I've been elminating noises slowly... New cam chain, e-fan.... Bust my bike still has noise that sounds abnormal to me.

it goes like this: Completely cold start, no noise to speak of. After about 45 seconds of running, I get a fairly loud "tock tock" noise that seems louder on the right side. This gets louder as the bike begins to warm up. It is only audible at idle, anything off idle sounds fine. I also will say that it is most obvious sitting on the bike. From the side, it is sometimes harder to pick out.

Then, when the bike is fully warm, after about 20 mins of riding, the noise is gone completely. This noise seems related but not the same as a higher-pitch clutch rattle which you can slightly hear with the clutch out and not at all with the clutch in.

Any noises you fellas know of that can fit this description?

The bikes are old and there's most likely some worn parts somewhere. My Blue CX I've managed to get very quiet but my now Main red one(Lazarus) still can have as similar sound as you describe.I'm almost certain it's the clutch not being as good as the other one noise wise but has no problems in service.

Also I still have one noisy tappet

on the Red bike which I'll re-dress when I get to my next oil change/tappet/cam=chain adjust which will come round soon-ish.

A decent recording again would help?

Also I use the wooden shaft of a small ball pane hammer to against the engine to hear noises. This can track some down.

Also remember that sat on the bike with a Helmet on will wrongly amplify sounds.

I will try to get a good recording for you.

A bad rod bearing would only get worse as the oil heats up, correct? Is it possible for the oil pump chain to cause noise? Mine seemed on the loose side.

Speaking of noise, on your site, the good CX with stock exhaust, is that the red one? Once mine warms up it sounds pretty much exactly like that bike.

I can't remember now. Both bikes have had exhaust swaps etc so I've got lost in the sounds. If it sounds like either of the good ones then it's a lot better than many I have heard.

I am going to pull the front cover and dig into the clutch today. I have a spare from my other engine and I will bring home some calipers and make the best clutch possible out of the two.

Just to be clear,

There is no way for rod knock to get better one the oil is fully warm, correct?

No one can guarantee this but it's not normal for any form of Rod or big-end shell wear sounds to get anything but worse as the engine warms up.

Excellent, thanks.

I suppose I could try removing the clutch basket and running the bike with the transmission completely disconnected.

We'll see what I find once I get it apart!

Got it apart... Nothing visibly wrong except for some rusty steels which I replaced.

I think I am just being paranoid. The dangers of being isolated from other CX riders!

I got a video today of the bike warmed up. Other than the loud clutch rattle, is there anything that sounds out of the ordinary? This is after about 20 miles of riding (put over 100 on today
)

I still need to get a vid of the bike on completely cold start (No noise whatsoever) and after a few minutes of running (sounds the worst)

My bike also has that same sound on the right hand side.I thought it was my cracked mech fan which I'm in the middle of converting to elec but now I see it's not that.I don't know what it is but I'm in the same boat I just hope it's normal or clutch rattle.Rod ends will usually not quiten & will be obvious cold so I would rule that out.

It is a lot more quiet in person. Also, if I run at speed and then idle (like pulling to a stop sign after a 45 mph zone), it will be completely silent. If I idle too long, the noise comes creeping back slowly.

Yeah it's weird sometimes I don't hear it & other times I do,when pulling up to a stop I notice it.typically mostly as you say when it idles for a bit.Once up to speed it's there but not as noticeable.I also have gone thru this beast but I can't narrow it down even with a stethescope. My Dads Gl500 also makes I think the same sound from what he's been telling me.

Doesn't sound too bad, did you swap with a known good clutch? Maybe new plates?
No...

I swapped the clutch basket from my parts bike, used the steels from my original engine, and made the best set of friction disks that I could from the two. There were some grooves in the basket.. I didn't smooth them too much.

Did the noise change at all after doing the clutch work
A little. Mostly it changed when stone cold. Before it would rattle then too.

Maybe I am just being overly sensitive to noises.

The fact it changed tells me you were in the right area.

I've been an auto tech for over 20 years now & I know how you feel.Rattles just dont seem right. But after listening to my friends new Ducati 696 it makes our rattles seem very quiet
.I have a feeling it just what these things sound like.(I hope)

LOL... this thread is making me hear noises, kinda like the phantom cell phone vibrations. The bigger the bike, the worse the noise in my experience. My older Honda 750 had the noisiest gear case I've ever heard... Some Harley Davidsons produce about 5hp of noise alone!

I ride with earplugs and it cuts a lot of the wind rumble and whistle letting me hear the motor / transmission better... that said, The CX clutch does have a nice oily spinning sound when engaged... freaky kinda
