After finally getting my bike back on the road I am noticing it doesn't want to take off in lower rpm's. It is real slow to accelerate until it hits 4-5k. I have taken the carbs apart a few times for cleaning since the flood and fairly confident the passages are clean. They are also balanced. Could the little black plugs in the fuel bowls be the cause? I noticed they were a little loose so they might have come off. Suggestions?

The symptom your describing is typical of the low jet being badly restricted. If you were to ride only it the rpm range below 5K, and then pull the plugs you would see them running mostly white indicating it to be very lean.

The low jet in the chamber under the black plug needs to be pulled and cleaned with a .018 drill bit. Carb cleaners will not do it. The last link in the Quick Reference post in the general section takes you to an old post I did on how to remove the low jet. Click here.

Unfortunately it will mean you need to pull the carbs. But you don't need to split them. Just pull the bowls and the center plug to get to the low jet.

Thanks Larry, pulling the carbs is the easy part. When I had them apart I pulled those jets and they were clean. I will give it another look though. Could the mixture be off? What about if the black plugs worked their way out?

I know you're looking at fueling issues, but being that 5k rpm is that 'magic point' you might check your low side CDI windings, provided you are CDI equipped.

Don't believe the GL500 has CDI.

Yes it could be mixture. Do you have them at 2 1/2 turns out to start with? The plugs could cause an issue. But I think it would be more on the rich running side than lean because the 78 jet would be bypassed by the drilled cross over hole for the low jet chamber. So I don't think that will be your problem.

Yes, started with them 2 1/2 turns out. Might need to borrow a friends colortune to see if I have it set. Will pull the plugs also to see what they look like.

Seems it might not be the carbs after all. Took a nice 90 mile ride this afternoon and noticed that if I am going down the road and hit the throttle too much the engine revs but the bike wont accelerate. I believe either the clutch cable is adjusted too tight or the clutch itself is bad. I am going to play with the cable first then do an oil change this weekend to get more flood junk out of the motor. How difficult a job is a clutch replacement?
