I was talking with a friend of mine tonight and mentioned that I needed to get some break fluid tommorow and said that I needed DOT 3 he suggested that even though the manual said DOT 3 i should use 4 or 5. This did not sound right to me but I figured I would ask... What is everyone elses opinion?

Use what the manual suggest. Anything more is a problem. I believe it's 5 that may eat the rubber in your caliper and Mc.

It's called BRAKE fluid. Break fluid is the stuff you get all over your pants when something breaks.

You can use either DOT 3 or DOT 4. Most stores only sell DOT4 these days, it's backward compatible and an improvement over DOT3.



'stich, silicone fluid (DOT5) is a completely different topic, used mostly for racing, best avoided on any road vehicle. The new DOT 5.1 is backward compatible, but I haven't even seen the stuff on shelves yet. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are all glycol-based and can be mixed/matched.
