i could have swore that my starter lost some teeth. everytime i go to start it there would be this terrible whirring and cracking. the starter would get very hot after a minute of trying to start it.i pulled the starter off and inspected. all the teeth are perfectly intact. the troublshooting flow chart in the fsm says its like ignition or internal engine. what should i check next?

no it actually sounds nothing like that. i'll take a video and post it. right now all the wiring is torn down because i wanted to hide the wires to the starter and high beams in the bars. its making a knock every so often so i thought it was hitting a dead spot in the gears. like i mentioned the teeth on the starter are good, i felt around as much of the flywheel as i could and i didn't feel anything out of place. i am hoping something was just misaligned and it fixed itself but i won't know til i get the controls hooked back up.

I would do the "starter ground fix" while you have it apart.

I don't know where to find it right now, but someone does. lol.

my sound doesnt sound anything like the video that was posted. i'm going to check the other things on the troubleshooting chart in the fsm. it states to check the ignition system. i have never pulled the spark plugs and the wires from the coil look a little old. my meter is m.i.a. so i gotta buy a new one to keep checking.

While the starter is out, I'd take it apart and clean and oil it. Remove the long phillips screws and that's about it. The rotor can get pretty rusty to the point that it actually hits the stator. Clean it with a wire wheel or manually with a wire brush.

I'm sure you know that starters should not be "on" for more than 15 seconds at a time. They're strictly limited duty motors.

As to your problem, I'm also going with an iffy starter clutch. Sometimes an oil change will fix it but more often, it's a motor out fix. Once the motor is out of the bike it's simple to repair.

when you say "motor out" do you mean the engine? i was able to remove the starter motor in 5 minutes without any issues and i popped it back in just as fast. one of the long screws is bent which makes taking it off a pain in the ass. i put it back on while i did my wiring at the bars. when thats all back together i'll dig back into the starter if its still a problem. i'm upgrading and eliminating alot of wiring. i see some questionable grounds and loose wiring.

no bro he is talking about the engine out of the bike.......they all seem to think that your starter clutch is going south but we all need a sound clip of it to be sure
