I am about to start putting things back together after replacing the stator. When I removed the rear engine cover, the shifter shaft and spring were dislodged, and I am not certain I have them back together correctly. Can someone advise me on this, please?

The teeth are meshed correctly, but the spring appears not to be hooked through the lower hole.

Check that the spring isn't stretched. Happens during rear cover removal.

The coils in the spring are all touching, so it seems not to be stretched.

Not necessarily.
This spring only does one simple job - to hold the teeth of the gearchange mechanism in contact with each other to prevent them fretting, vibrating and to keep the gearchange lever from having excessive wobble.
Even if that spring were completely missing you`d not notice any difference in the characteristics of the gearchange operation or transmission.
