Is it necessary to paint motor?

In the process of prepping the motor to repaint it, I think I stripped almost all the old coating (with the help of paint stripper and the dremel). But now I really like the motor in it's stripped state and don't want to paint it. It has a nice "patina" to it actually



Is it really necessary to actually paint the motor? If I leave it unpainted, would it be enough to spray it down every so often with some kind of lubricant (like WD40)? Thanks.

It's just MOF Bob. The motors painted black are dirt bikes and enduro's mainly. I'd like to see someone sliding one of these slugs through the muddy trails. BTW my motor is silver.

The black dirt bike engines I have seen are usually satin (semi-gloss) or gloss. At any rate, the bikes we deal with on this forum are all liquid cooled so the colour doesn't matter much for heat dissipation.



I have, on occasion, (usually when I'm washing it in the spring after baking dirt on all winter) contemplated painting the engine of my winter machine with PlastiKote Engine Enamel #233 Cummins Beige so the dirt will show less

In the 80's I worked stripping and painting small aircraft. Mostly Piper's and Cessna's.

So, if you have the time, patience and want a paint job that's going to last 10 to 20 years (maybe longer), here's how to do it.

If things go as planned I'll strip it in my hangar, then the shop in Iowa that does my maintenance has offered to finish the prep and shoot the colors for me.

No, the Cummins paint is the only colour that would hide the dirt. You know that's why most motorhomes are beige, don't you?

The point showed up so I tried doing what you did on one of your posts and it went negative and didn't give me the option of changing my mind so I gave a couple of your other posts positive points

Thanks for the thanks Interstate. It's funny. I was asking myself why I was expanding on this and started to second guess but, I went with the flow and puched the post button. There are some details you should know about stripper before you strip the plane. I'm new to the forums world so, I'm unfamiliar with proper protocol. I think I choose the setting allowing you to email me. I'm glad I was of help. The reason we're here and my intent.

For Bob. If I posted a proceedure which lacked detail I genuinely apologize. The mind is the first to go. Then the hard drive. My HD went south about a week and a half to two weeks ago and lost all my bookmarks to sites and the forums I was on. If the possible quick fix (without pulling the motor) for the starter clacking noise is what you may be refering to I believe I stated it may be a possible way. I'm uncertain whether I stated or infered the sure way is motor out lying on it's face (clutch cover to the ground). My intent is to help. No offense has been intended and none has been taken. We are gear heads. Power to the Forums.

I would say it's confirmed that the "UR" 1978 CX engine was not painted. It did however have a clear coat applied, whether that counts as "paint" is up for debate. I wasn't going to paint, but will give it a half hearted attempt since it looks so crappy after most of the clear coat is a fond memory.
