Maybe someone has filled the diff with grease?? 30 years is a long time, and a lot of PO's.
(Previous Owners) Wouldn't be hard to whip off the fill plug and squeeze grease in.
Would be really hard to clean out, if it is. You can strip them down, but it's a little time consuming. Probably get a 2nd hand one easier. I'd be worried if it only takes half the required amount of oil.
