The cx500 uses a different igntion system than the Gl500.
The cx is a cdi based ignition that has a 3 circuit stator and pulsars in the engine, Where as the gl has a 1 circuit stator and pulsars are by the battery.
If you want to swap either way you have to swap all the guts in the rear cover and the rotor on the back of the engine. The cx rotor has 1 indent and the gl has 2.
Not sure why you would do this. If you have a good cdi and stator, you could sell or trade it for the GL parts you need,,,you would have to remove the engine from the gl and change the rear cover and flywheel and change all the wiring on the bike to swap the ignition system from one bike to the other and you would end up with a system that is not as reliable.
The CX ignition sw you have closes contacts to ground an ignition wire to stop the engine. The GL (and 1982 CX500) ignition sw opens contacts to disconnect power to the ignition to stop the engine. Opposite operation.
Get a "new" CX (but not 1982) ignition switch and leave the engine in the bike and the rear cover in place.
To make it clear what I have is an 82 gl500 with no key and no cylinder. I want to know if I can take the old cylinder with a key and swap the keyed cylinder out of my parts bike a 79 cx 500 and if it is possible. How?
