The small engine guy I buy spark plugs, cables, and general stuff from has a CX500 engine on the shelf. He thinks it has a bad cam chain. He said it came off a Custom but doesn't remember what year. The engine serial number is CX500E2006764. If anyone can direct me to right spot to find the year of the engine, thanks.

Look in the Reference topic. There's exactly what you need under "CX/GL Serials ID for all years and models." I think it's a 1978 CX500. No Custom model that year.

Well, to me its not clear cut that engine s/n's follow the vin. But I guess what I'm after is whether it is cdi or ti. If its close to another known '78, I'll accept that. I never got close to the engine, he was reading the number off as I wrote it down. I was planning on pulling the '79 engine out this winter and doing a tear down in the basement. Anyway, this '78 could be a good parts or rebuilder if needed. I'm thinking of offering $50. He said he got it as a spare for his GL500 but then wanted to make it into a standby generator after he sold the SW.

Constuction guys came and jackhammered out the last section of basement floor up Monday then left. They have to digout the old sewer and lay in new, then concrete up the holes I had down there for going on 3 years. When they are done I moving a metal worktable and tools in before my daughters use up all the space.

If you are talking about the engine serial number, yes, that is specific to the engine only. No matter what frame it was in, which carries the VIN number. The three punch marks on the engine would determine if it had gone through the recall. Those would be next to the engine serial number, IIRC. If they are not there, the engine would be questionable for use, but certainly not worthless. Your offer sounds reasonable.

Caveat.....I am assuming this to be correct from my limited knowledge base, so if I am wrong, I'll gladly accept correction from those more in the know.
