What's going on here? From my GL:

Left Muffler:

Right Muffler:

Can I just plug the smaller holes and bring the mufflers back to where they were before the holes were made?

Yeah, someone just wanted a little more sound
It looks to me like someone has drilled out the 4 mounting rivets. There is a good chance that your baffles are loose inside the shell. See if you can slide the baffles foreward.
Yep, sure does look like the holes are where the 4 mounting rivets should be. PO did the same on mine, but I didnt know that they were not supposed to be there. Found out last year when I cracked her open on the 401 and one baffle (left) decided I was being to hard on it and chose to leave me and go visit the 18 wheeler behind me. Fortunatly I dont think it hit him (or if it did he didnt notice because Im still here) and I got home as fast as I could. The right one was stiull in, but it was loose and jiggly, so I pulled it out to save a repeat.

Ended up putting a set of dynas on that sound ..... well .... not sure :-( stator died and I havent had a chance to see how it sounds lol .... sooon ..... very soon

Hey FADM, I see where you had a couple of pics of the innards of these mufflers in another post, but Photobucket says they have been deleted or moved. Can you repost the pics here? Thanks.
Sorry, was cleaning up the photobucket pages and sorted them (which is guess messed up the link). Here is the new link

I did similar to mine. Except I drilled between the rivets, just to add some sound. Started with 4 - 3/16" holes in each muffler but ended up with 4 - 5/16" holes. Gives just enough so you can hear the exhaust up to 40-45mph, after that wind noise drowns it out. Had my son do a few take offs and drive byes, and I'm happy with the noise level and tone.

Gotta love free mods.

My friend did the same to his fuel injected Suzuki and I was thinking about doing the same to my GL500, did you have to adjust the air mixture any after that?
Just be carefull, as it sure looks like he drilled out the rivets (probably to pull out the baffles then couldnt figure out why they didnt come out and said screw it). It will stay in because the other end of the baffle assembly fits into another pipe piece farely tight, and thats holds it in. The proble is without the rivets, the vibration can loosen that loint, and once it does the exhaust pressure will force it out ... at a good speed too lol. Had one of mine blow out on the highway and "maybe" hit the 18 wheeler behind me (not sure). Just glad it wasnt a car or it could have caused some issues.

Nope, but I did lose 2mpg (53 to 51) which maybe from winding the motor out more between gear changes, just to hear the exhaust. LOL Maybe I'll get my 2mpg back once the novelty wears off.?

But, no I didn't make any other changes and it runs just fine.

And like FADM Stern GNSF said, dont drill out the rivets, drill in between them.
