Hi All,

Just a quick post to introduce myself, funny enough i found this site a bit by accident but glad i did. I have just returned from 17 yrs without a bike, my last was a 78 Z650 Hardtail Chop and i loved it, though my backside didnt. I have just been given a 82 GL400 Wing of which is a non runner due to the air cut-off diaphrams rotting away, now trying to source these has been a chore in its self, I didnt realize how rare the dam bike was. Trying to find bits for it here in the UK or anywhere in the world to think of it has been a nightmare, so finding a site that dedicates itself to GL's and CX's is a god send. Anyway I found a place here in the UK that could make me some Phrams.....gonna be slipping them in in a mo as my better half need to use the PC. Hopefully with a dash of new fuel and the new phrams she will breath again after 2 years in a coma, and off-course, i will let you know.

Till then

Bye for now

Greetings, and welcome to the forum. A good mix of information and personalities here. Have fun and good luck getting the GL back on the road. I would think you could get diaphrams already made, right off the shelf? Larry is one of the carburetor guru(s) on this board.

Cheers, 50gary

Welcome MrB

where in the UK are you?

theres a few 'goddam limeys' here

as well as others from far flung places.

theres load of great info here, enjoy.

wont go cos of bad diafram thingys?

dont sound right to me, I've pulled em out in bits from running bikes

maybe the carbs/filters need a wash and brush up? plus new plugs fluids etc

The GL400 has a TI motor and has many parts common with later CX's so

you shouldnt struggle to find parts to get and keep it running.

Cosmetic stuff may be trickier.

Wemoto in Brighton are a good place to start and I see they do the cut off valve sets for

£16 and change

when in the wemoto site, do a seach for the 'Honda CX500 Custom CC'

apart from the obvious cylinder difference and few other cometic bits, the vast majority and most important CC parts will do for your GL400.

heres the link to the CC custom page

Hello Mr B

Where in UK are you? - I live in the states at present but am a Brit. I tend to agree with Reg, I am sure once you pull those carbs apart you will find more woes that rotted diaphragm's as you can pull the diaphragm's and they will run. These are pretty hardy little motors and it takes a lot to stop them

Welcome to the site, Mr.B. It looks like you have already received some good suggestions for bringing your GL back to life! Check out the various threads on this board, especially the buy & sell. As has been said, there are a lot of good folks on this board from many different places. Don't be a stranger.

Let me add my welcome to you also, Mr. B. Stick around and have some fun. These guys know most everything, and a few think they know more than everything. And a couple of them actually do.

You should be able to bypass your ACV system using a rubber disk/plug in lieu of the O ring under the cover. The ACV controls the enrichment on deceleration to minimize popping/backfiring. It actually enriches the mixture at high vacuum levels. If you leave the spring and what is left of the diaphragm in, and block the hole, you may have to enrich the mixture a half turn or so to stop the backfiring. These were mostly EPA mandated over here, to control emissions by letting the bike run leaner.
