hey, ive been reading on this forum and decided to join on with a question about a 1982 gl500. my neighbor has on that is not in terrible shape but definitely needs to be restored. it cranks and has started but if you dont hold the throttle almost wide open it dies. i am sure that it is the carbs needing to be cleaned. the bike overall is not a horrible looking one and i do like the twisted engine look. so he is looking to sell it for 500 bucks and i don't think for around here for that bike it is too much? he said he will happily hold the title while i pay him a little each week to get it. so i guess im really asking is 500 to much? i will be doing all the repairs as i am pretty handy at building and rebuilding 4 wheelers. oh it has 17,000 miles and decent tires. thanks

A guy near me just sold one (a gl500) for $350 with carb problems and 36k miles. He started out at $1000 on craigslist and went down over 3 weeks to $350, I called to late and he sold it!

I saw another ad recently for a cx500 with 16k miles for $450, the pic in the ad looked like the bike was really nice and had a nice fairing. That ad was erased from craigslist the next day.

Here in VA nice GL500's go for $1000-$1500, so your neighbors bike seems like a good deal to me, depends on how good the cosmetics are and how much work it needs.

Every one of these are going to have a small amount of minor projects that need to be done. Nice thing is you can do them yourself. I'd jump on it.

I agree, it sounds like a good deal. I'd go for it. We on this forum will help you with every single thing on that bike. There's nothing that a home mechanic can't do on these bikes.

I say forget it. Next thing you know you will have it running great and riding it all over Fla. 12 months out of the year.

J/K, seriously you know you want it, so get it and get at it, and enjoy it. Plenty of help here at CC to get you on the

road, these are fun little intermediate motorcycles.

Good luck.

Get new tires. Old tires could get you hurt as they are hard and do not stick. $500 sounds like a decent deal but I got 2 bikes with a spare engine for $300 in Sunrise FL. One is my regular cafe racer ride and the other is becoming a steam punk cafe racer. These bikes beg to be modified as they hit every brach on the ugle tree.

I saw one guy on a harley today. Didn't really look like he was dressed for it but it was 30 degrees for a while.

Milwaukee vintage moto is already talking about Ice biking next week. I don't know on what lake but they say there's 9 inches. Every lake I see doesn't even have ice.

Maybe I'll pull the bike out for the weekend. High of 46 and 40% chance of rain. I need to wash the bike after the last time I was out.

Well lets just say these are unofficial anything. More like guys, bikes and screwing around. Last year they did it every weekend on one of the local lakes.

Lily Lake

Camp Lake

and

Okauchee Lake

They usually announce it a few days before they go out there. They have had pretty good luck finding quads or trucks to plow the track. Last year they had one identical to Road America.

In south FL the riding season is now. Summertime means rains in the afternoon followed by steam off the hot roads. Humidity is always 90% or higher 8 months out of the year. I would gladly give up a few months of riding for roads that are not flat and straight. Also when the temps get below 60 it is relly cold due to the humidity.

So I guess the grass is not always greener on the other side.
On "our" side the grass is covered with 2 feet of snow

and the bike riding is a chore dodging the 3-5 foot drifts.
I would gladly give up "all" of winter for wet flat roads

and humidity and 60 degree weather. Want to trade?

I worked in Minesota for 9 months and is well aware of what cold is (still not Canada). Lived in NY and rode prety much year round. The riding in south FL is poor due to the heat and drivers that are very agresive. Our afternoons rains can dump as much as 1"/hour, sometimes more. I would drive up to Georgia 3 times a year just to get to decent roads that are fun to ride.
