GL650 coolant capacity/changeout procedure

5259 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BikerMike
I want to change the coolant in the '83 GL650 I just bought because I have no idea when it was last done - but I'm not sure where the drain is or what the system capacity is, as well as any other procedures I should know about before starting. I'd also like to put in a new thermostat - just because the one in there may be 28 years old.

Any tips/advice would be appreciated!

The coolant system is only about two quarts of coolant.

The best way to do a coolant change is to remove the two bolts (one on each jug) on the engine behind the radiator. It just depends on how far you want to go since a good deal of coolant is going to come out with a basic drain of the radiator.
