i have seen in various other threads a reference to a very small hole in the master cylinder casting that must be cleared with a small wire. In the picture, there is the main line at the top, and a small "divot" (for lack of a better term) below that. Is there supposed to be a smaller hole there as well?

You got it, Dan. You can even see the tiny hole in your picture. If you don't have a small wire, try pulling a wire out of a wire brush. They are usually tiny and stiff. The wires now, not anything else.

As a last resort a really really small jewelers drill bit will do the job. I had one that I fought with for a few days and it was the only way I could get a hole back in.

I have a wire size drill bit set and had to use the #60 bit to drill it clear. The hole was so packed with goo and stuff that it couldn't be punched out with a wire strand. Be sure and clean the o-ring seat out good to prevent the reservoir from leaking.
