I have never taken the wheel off a shaft drive motorcycle before and I was wondering when I take the rear wheel off to have the tire replaced do I remove the spline drive/bearing hub assembly or leave it on and cover it so no dirt gets in?

The rear wheel comes off with the brake hub.The rest stays on so yes just cover it up.They waggle out quite easy. You may want to get some Moly grease from the Auto shop and re-grease the drive box splines and service the rear brake hub e.g clean it up and make sure it actuates nice. You can also use a bit of emery cloth to clean the inner lining of the hub so it's clean and smooth-ish.

Okay thank you, I kind of figured they may be a metric o-ring in there or something I didn't want to disturb if I didn't have too.
