GL 500 engine in a CX 500

Hey guys,

I posted my 78 CX on Craigslist to sell as is, and someone replied offering to sell me an engine from an 81 GL 500 Silverwing. From what I could tell online it seems that the ignition is different so I was wondering what the compatibility would be, and how much work it would take to install it.

Thanks

I have a Eurosport TI motor in a 78 frame

I believe the GL motor is TI too?

they will fit but they are are longer so you'll have to move the expansion bottle

and decide which rad and thermostat system to use.

You'll also need TI spark units and coils plus sections of the GL ignition harness

and enough knowledge of the few but important differences of both systems not to make any serious cock ups.

It isnt difficult as long as you have the parts and know what you're doing

Eloquent Reg-

Worked for Mary Shelley and my plummer too. I'm writing that line on my cell wall, TY.
What's wrong with your 78CX?

That sounds like one of those posts from a movie.

Wouldn't it be simpler to put the rear cover and flywheel from the CX engine on the Gl engine?

It was given to me by a friend of a friend who had begun disassembling the engine to find the source of a knocking sound. I took it apart and found that one of the main bearings was extremely worn. But I have been told that there are no oversized bearings for this engine so I cannot just get the crankshaft turned. So I have been trying to find a working replacement engine because the frame and gas tank are in great shape.

Shipping could be a bind but,

Another alternative if you can source the stock shells would be another crank but you would need to get it checked at a local engine/engineering specialist and the engine needs completely internally flushing to remove any chance of metal debris,

This is how both my CX engines have been re-built.

Note:For all intents and purposes ALL CX/GL 500 crankshafts can be used in ALL CX/GL 500 none turbo engines without need to replace the main bearings which even on the worst basket case engine I have had were still usable, unlike the big-ends.

Hi,

If the GL500 motor has a manual cam chain adjuster ( some here in the UK had auto adj.), just swap the rear cover from the cx and the rotor/flywheel. The flywheels look identical but the CX has a small brass plug in the side which it needs to trigger the pulsers for the cdi ignition. If the GL has an auto chain adjuster you would need to blank the hole in the rear case for the manual one.
