Does anyone have a good source for the chain that retains the fuel filler cap? Is it bronze, or just cadmium steel?
I've only seen a couple on ebay, from Eastern Europe, I think. Maybe I need a better search term.
Thanks.

Apparently, this is called "sash chain" (all my old wood windows used braided sash cord), and I should be able to find it at the hardware store.

I can get bronze at McMaster-Carr. Might be safer in the fuel tank. I'll do a magnet test on the short section I have when I measure the width.

You're going to help me find my marbles? 😃 They've been missing for so long!

When the chain was intact, I'd invert the cap and lay it against the front edge of the tank. Not too concerned about scratching.

If anyone's interested, I used a magnet to determine that the chain is non-ferous, as you might expect for use in the fuel tank. Most likely bronze.
The best facsimile I can find is #12 sash chain. My local hardware store has that size, but only in chrome. McMaster-Carr has it in brass:
