My 79 cx500 custom came without a front fender. No big deal but I think I want to replace it to help avoid all manner of potential debris from smacking me.

Also from a superficial perspective I can’t help but think motorcycles without fenders look kind of silly to me. I’ve seen OEM ones on eBay that will run me about $50 or $60 after shipping and taxes but I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations or suggestions.

For my requisite stupid question, will I need to remove my front tire in order to install whatever fender I get? Thanks!

The original front fender included a steel structure to act as a fork brace. Your bikes handling will benefit from having a fork brace.

I see, so I should get a fork brace as well if I don’t see a fender that comes with one? I feel like my bike handles pretty well already so any improvements to its handling is something I’m very excited for.

If you do fit an aftermarket fork-brace...loosen all the other relevant fork and axle bolts (and tighten them up again...)....that will reduce the risk of stiction from uneven forces....

Adding a fork brace may not make an immediate difference if the front end alignment is good and you don't lean hard into bumpy corners but it will keep the alignment from moving as easily in the future.
