I have a 1980 cx500c, the previous owner swapped a 1981 from end in. I took the wheel off to install a new speedo drive and then torqued everything down to the spec of the 81 manual. The brakes started dragging and the speedometer gearbox is pinched between the fork and the wheel if the cable is in the right place ( under the gearbox instead of above).

These two things are having me think something is missing on the front axle that allowed it to thread further before reaching the torque spec.
There was a spacer on the manual drawing for the 81 axle, I'm not sure if my axle should have it or not because the axle itself looks different than the 81 axle.

Does anyone see anything wrong with the pictures below.

Thanks

For a start, you have the speedo drive 180 degrees out. The cable should exit to the rear.

While tightening the axle, the speedo drove would pinch against the fork if I ran it to the rear. The speedo drive is an 80 model, with a bolt style retainer, the 81 used a clip retainer. The front end is an 81. Could that be the reason it pinches?

It looks to me that you are missing the axle collar that goes into the oil seal on the right side of the wheel. The threads on the axle should be flush with the fork leg when torqued properly.

What does this axle collar look like? I dont believe I had one when I took it apart. Any chance you know a part number?

It's got to run to the rear (the cable would not run well with that kink in it, and would probably soon snap). There should be two pips on the speedo drive housing that engage with a pip on the fork leg lower (or vice versa, depending on model). If the parts are from different model years and are physically different, then yes that could be the problem.

Part #4 in of the Partzilla link above. It may be different in length for a 81.

Don't put too much trust in Internet listings. The '81 Custom and '81 Deluxe have different forks. The '81 and '82 Customs have the same front end.
You'll need to compare part numbers from the '80 and '81 assemblies. (Use an online parts fiche, like Partzilla linked above, or download the relevant parts manuals from the wiki.)
I suspect you can't mix and match the pieces here.
