What purpose does the shiny shim with the little arrow facing forward on the front brake pad serve? My caliper piston dust rubber dust cover needs to be replaced, and after looking at it was just wondering what that does.

It's an anti-squeal plate.

It keeps the pad from vibrating which is what causes the squeal that you hear.
