Alright...

So i bought this bike about a month ago, have put about 50 miles on it because i couldn't bare to wait riding it. (1979 CX500 CUSTOM)

I've put about 60 miles on it and started this morning to change out all the fluids not knowing their history.

The rear shaft drive oil was clean, but thicker than molasses...

The coolant was pretty nasty too.

The scary part was the oil. No metal shavings, but hard brittle clumps about the size of bb's. Best guess is plastic?

I had assumed this bike was well taken care of, i bought it from an older gentleman with a half dozen honda's and he's had it since the late 80's.

What is this stuff? I've never seen anything like it come out of engine oil? So....what is it? Cam tensioner? Is there anything else internal that is plastic?

I took pictures...but can't figure out how to post them...

to post the pics you need to upload them to a photo posting site like photobucket.com. Then you click on the box above the text here that is called "insert image". Then you paste the link to the picture on the posting site.

Just remember what they say about Assumptions. Unless you see how a person treats a bike you won't really know.

If the cam chain tensioner goes bad, you will know it. Bike will run but will sound terrible; like a coffee can full of nuts and bolts. Cam tensioner could be spalling out but still have enough meat to keep the chain in place. How many miles does your bike have? Someday, you will have to replace the tensioner anyway. Many of us on this CX/GL500 forum have done so. Its pretty easy but you have to take the motor out to do it. That's easy too.
