You actually want it to be a little bit warm - not only does it thin out the gear oil, which improves efficiency, but it also helps to drive off moisture.

Final Drive on a 82 gl500i. How hot should the final drive case get? Oil level full to bottom of large hole. Riding at 65-70 mph, head wind 20 mph. Traveled about 75 miles non-stop, 220 lb. driver.
