Howdy everyone,

I just bought my first motorcycle as an early graduation from college present to myself. I bought a CX500d 1981 in great condition with only 16,xxx miles. However, you can tell it is in need of a tune-up. From what I gather it needs a new muffler, a new diaphragm in the petcock, some new seals for the front forks (air assisted), a flasher relay, and all the fluids changed (of course). Those little parts that I need are expensive at my local dealership and other stores. Anybody know any good ones online that will do cheaper?

Welcome to the forum. Please take a few minutes to edit your profile to show your location and to edit your signature to show your bike's year and model.

Check out the Quick Reference thread in the General Discussion section. It has a link to information about the group discount for Honda parts in addition to many other useful topics.

For used parts, ebay is a good place to look.

As well as the source Dave mentioned there are a few good online resources. Georgfix has an ebay store and everyone seems to talk highly of him. Also check outhttp://www.tasmotorsports.com/

I don't know if you will find everything you need there but defiantly good places to start.

Welcome Dan! Good for you on choosing the CX. It's a fun bike, and we'll be looking forward to hearing how well it's restore is coming along.

I will +1 on the good folks at TAS Motorsports. I have ordered from them once so far, and they did OK by me. The included candy sucker in the shipping box was a big hit! Not expected but that tells me they like to have fun. I did inquire about some side cover grommets that they were selling and was nice enough to ask for feedback from me to see if they were the right part.

EBay can be a source of parts. I have gotten some good deals there before I found out about this forum. Because of this forum, I found there are differences with the CX based on the year of manufacturer, so my recommendation is to verify the parts you buy to make sure that they are for the specific year and model you own.

Also inquire here as many of us may have a spare part or three to sell or have information about the source of the part.

Specific to your needs:

Flasher- get one at the local auto parts store. I have used the $3 ones and they work fine for the incandescent bulbs.

Muffler- search this forum and you will find the cheapest solution is the Harley Davidson FLH mufflers used on Sportsters, etc. In my sig line is the picture of the ones I got from a friend for FREE
that replaced my old rusted out ones. And they sound great! Repro's are more expensive, but available.

Fluids- I shop at Wal*Mart for those.

Seals- Check online with TAS and the others mentioned in the Quick Reference FAQ.

HTH,

RAGBrian

I need a transmission cover gasket, anyone know where to get one??? The dealer can get one in a few days, but I don't like them, and they want about what Bike bandit is after shipping, just wondering if there are other options....

Try calling Matt @ http://www.tasmotorsports.com - free shipping on smaller stuff and possibly a discount if you mention my name.

Pick up a pack of oil filters and an air filter while you're there.

Marshall,

Did you ask TAS to investigate handling Purolator filters? I sent them an email asking about it and got no response.

I just send John at discount Honda a request, but they may be obligated to only handle honda filters. We'll see.

I hit them up, I even talked to Purolator for a while. They still make the filter but the last ones they sold were to a place in Kansas. They said any PepBoys should be able to order them but all the stores around here say they can't even order them.

Best I could find on good filters is still the K&N-111 and the Wix filter which NAPA carries.

Did you know that your hometown had meter reading cx trikes. I got a parking ticket from one when I was having lunch at the St louis train station; the old one. I used to have a pic of it. Don't think I do anymore.

Yep, I remember those scurrying around the city years ago! Once in awhile, one turns up for sale locally. The last one I saw listed for sale on Craigslist was advertised at $4500.00!
