Hi all.

I have noticed that some CX models have a breather installed in the engine inspection hole. Why do some have this, and some not? Was it a factory retrofit to solve venting problems? If so, what kind of symptoms where there?

When this breather is installed, is the original blocked off?

My belief is it was added for emission standards. It acts for positive crankcase ventilation, crankcase gases get sucked out with positive force and recycled through the intakes, instead of just vented off.

Yep the earliest Z bikes vented from steel tubes fitted in the heads

Later A models were modded by stopping the tubes with rubber caps and the 'bottle' breather fitted

B type heads were not machined for the tubes as the bottle breather became standard.

TI engined bikes had neither as they breathed from the pulser housing on the rear cover

Thanks. It seems Honda struggled a bit to find a good solution for the engine breathing. Must have been some problems with the different setups. I have the earliest one, with the channels in the heads routed towards the filter cannister. I have noticed a fair amount of condensation, mixed with oil, running out of the vent tubes.

Have you drained your air box tubes recently? You should do it once a year.

No, I haven't. Will look at it shortly. It could be blocked for all that I know.

I just wondered if upgrading to the 'bottle' variant would be a good idea?

I don't think it's going to matter. It's all about crank gasses not a quart of oil and water floating around in your airbox.

There are two hoses from the airbox and each has a plug in them. They need to be drained every year. Sure some people may never get anything in them and others will have tons of fluid. Oh and it's a necessity to put the plugs back in so don't think you can have it easy but not doing it.

I'm with Don on this.Just as the season kicks in in Spring time I

Remove Air filter and it's base.

Pour some washing up liquid into the air box and squidge around with a small paint brush.

Boil up a couple of kettles of water and pour them in and Squidge around bit more and with the the drain plugs removed.

Then dry out with some tissue.

If it's not been done whilst you have had the bike it's well worth doing now.
