Hey guys, absolute newbie here, just bought my first motorbike, 1983 CX650 custom and started work on it, taking the engine out and going to try and give it a thorough tune up. Im armed with the haynes and the Clymer guides but for the life of me i cannot find the locating bolt to disengage the drive shaft, any help or pictures where i can find the bloody thing would be much appreciated. Great forum been searching all over the place getting used to the bike on it! Many Thanks,

Scott

hi scott,and welcome from spain.

the bolt you need to remove is under the flexable rubber, pull it foward and you will see the bolt

I've never looked at a cx650 but this is kind of odd. The 500's have a pin at the front but his has what looks like a c clip.

You know the manual really doesn't help. On the page for removing and installing the engine it didn't say how to separate it.

Page 69.

Disengage the drive shaft from the universal joint assembly by adjusting the jack height and moving the engine forward.
Looks like it has a snap ring, my beemers like that

If so, you need to use a lever or grab it with

vice grips and tap it off

that seems really antiquated compared to the 500 set up

That's interesting. On my 83 GL650I, there is the bolt that needs to be removed. I just checked the parts diagram, and sure enough, the Custom drawing doesn't show the bolt, but the GL does. I wonder why they made them different?
Unless we get the voice of experience to give a definitive answer

I'd suggest pulling the boot way back and checking there really is no bolt

If so, I'd use gentle to moderate leverage to see if the UJ will move and

pull away from the output shaft.

maybe you need to pull the motor forward a bit too?

Obviously someone who's done the job on a 650C would be the best guide.
Bolt under the boot.
Here's one on ebay. I don't see anything.

Got it off today, there is no bolt, blindstitch was right, you just have to get it up on the jack and slide it forward. Thanks a lot for all the help though, im sure i will be on again with more questions soon! cheers.

Scott,

There is no bolt. You do not have to remove the c-ring unless you want to take the output shaft out of the rear case. Your bike is the only transverse twin to use this set-up. Why it was changed for the CX650c only is totally beyond me.

If the driveshaft came off that hard be sure to clean up the splines carefully and lube them up with the proper grease so it moves freely on the output shaft ...

Can someone please Get a diameter of the shaft in the middle? I'm working on extending a rear swing on one, but want materials on hand to get it all back together that same day.

In the pic blindstitch posted, No. 2. Mic the middle of that please!

anyone's help is greatly appreciated!!
Well it was an ebay picture but I bet I have one somewhere around here.
Just measured it out and it's 3/4 inch.
Awesome!! Thank you!!! That's gonna be easier then I thought it was gonna be! I'm going to try to extend mine about 3 inches!! Thank you very much!
