Okay folks, the other day I blew a fork seal while out riding. I ordered up new seals, dust seals, and o-rings. I also got some nice 20 weight fork oil. I got a chance to take the forks off yesterday and take them apart. Or try taking them apart. I noticed some issues:



1) When I removed the cap, I expected spring pressure to push it off in my hand. There was no spring pressure. In fact the spring sits about another inch below the cap. Do I have the wrong springs?

2) Forks were BADLY pitted, scratched, and BENT! Looks like the previous owner tried to hide a few things. Below the dust seal, the fork tube was actually dented in in one spot!



So, I need new fork tubes. Does anyone know of a good supplier? I've heard of Frank's on other forums but have yet to call him. I plan to call on Monday. Should I just buy some used ones and hope? And as noted above, what should I do about the springs?

Are there two springs in your forks? A small and a big.



Progressive springs are a decent solution.

33mm.... 1.296" dia. on a 78 cx500

35mm.... 1.375" dia. on an 81 GL500I and 82 GL500

37mm.... 1.453" dia. on an 83 GL500I and ?83 Saber fork

39mm.... 1.532" dia. on a couple 83 CX650 Customs

ah,.. no, I didn't disassemble...

thought the P/N was for a kit that included new tubes.... My bad.

But, I did re-learn to use my calipers... actually finding them was a greater feat!

Thanks Shep! I feel like an idiot. You guys came up with some very quick. I spent an hour or so the other night searching for fork tubes and springs and had very little luck. Did you know where to look?

I've researched them before.Just a reminder.The word,"Progressive" is used to sell forks springs but even the original fork springs on these machines were progressive AFAIK.This is not to say that newer manufacturing techniques and brand have a part to play in improvement.

"Hagon" have been a major brand in road and race bikes for years so their stuff will be of top quality and of course age and wear compresses any set of springs so they are a long term consumable.



Note: My ride and handling improved instantly when I changed to heavy weight fork oil.Considering the cheap cost of the fork oil this is a really good cheap upgrade.

Well, looks like I had a stroke of luck! I decided to check Craigslist for something compatible with 39mm forks. I found two complete 1983 Honda Shadow 750s for $300! What luck! The fork seals are an exact match so I could buy those and rebuild the forks off of that. My tire also matches! I would then have better forks and twin disc front brakes to boot!



Well, I called on them and they were sold

So I put up an ad on Craigslist asking if anyone had an old non-titled parts bike. Within hours I get an email from the guy that bought the above bikes! I'm going to go look at the forks this weekend and make sure they are OK. I also ordered some fork gaiters so my seals will last longer this time.



Keep your fingers crossed, I should have a new front end this weekend!
