So I have the engine out to fix the starter clutch problem, which is going well, just need a few more parts. While I have the option I thought I would ask everyone's opinion about life left in the cam chain. Bike has 20k on it. Chain is taught and there are no metal flakes or horrible damage to the inside of the engine.



So does it need to be replaced soon, meaning now, or is it good for a while, meaning at least 5 to 10k miles?

It doesnt look too bad to me wear wise

I'd say it had life left in it but note its position and look at it again in

the 5 to 10 thou you mentioned

I agree with Reg, I think it has another 10-20 thousand miles in it. But checking after another 10 would be a good idea.

The chain looks rather good. If you do the relatively simple automatic tensioner modifications I posted a few days ago, you can certainly forget that part of the motor for another30-40k miles.
